The Big Cheese

We’ve found that the best hosts really know their cheese. What’s better is that they share their delicious knowledge, curating decadent fromage plates for weeknight get-togethers, Sunday brunches – even book club meetings! Here’s our handy guide on crafting your own cheese plate, a skill that any would-be entertainer should master.

1. First things first – always include one familiar cheese! Even those with persnickety palates shouldn’t feel left out. A mild cheddar is always a safe bet.

2. Make sure to include a variety of cheeses in your assortment. A good rule of thumb is to include cheeses from the following categories: aged, firm, soft, and blue. Here are some of our favorites from each category.

Aged: White Cheddar

Firm: Smoked Gouda, a young Pecorino

Soft: Brillat Savarin

Blue: Stilton, Gorganzola

3. Don’t forget your accoutrements! Yummy extras include sliced fruit, honeys, jam, nuts (we recommend Marcona almonds, the delicious Spanish cousin of regular almonds) and baguette slices. If you’re unsure if those candied pecans do indeed pair nicely with your goat’s milk cheese, ask the cheesemonger (yes, they’re called that) at the cheese shop where you purchased your selections. They possess a wealth of knowledge on the subject and should be able to point you to several perfect pairings.

4. Create your tempting your display! Our Classic Entertaining event has several chic boards and serving trays perfect for showcasing your favorite cheeses.
